Hello everyone, my name is Olivia Lahey, and this is my second year on the Okanagan Ski Team. From U8 to U16, I skied with the Vernon Ski Club at the one and only Silverstar Mountain Resort. Although my first season was cut short, I had an incredible time, and I am stoked for this year.
As of right now, the team is locked in on dryland. Everyone is hard at work on improving their strength and endurance before we get on snow. Almost every weekend, the team gets together for a lift, run, field session, or hike. For me, dryland looks a little different from my teammates, as I am recovering from injury.
In March, I hit my head and suffered a concussion, and I have been dealing with symptoms ever since. This means that my dryland sessions are less intense than I would like them to be. Instead of long and intense runs, I have been doing some short steady pace runs and lots of walks, with the goal of having no symptoms. My weight-lifting program is mostly stationary exercises, as I am able to load more weight without symptoms occurring. Although it is hard not training at the intensity I would like, my main goal is to heal and get back to 100%. Thankfully, I have a great physio and supportive coaches by my side.
After getting back from Europe, where the team picked up tennis, Rowan, Oliver, Tylee, and I have been getting together for some epic matches. Tennis has by far been the highlight of my offseason training and has been a great way to stay competitive and active. Soon, we will be departing for Panorama, where we will begin our pre-season training.
